Range anxiety – what range anxiety!

By Ian Tobin

Range beat up! Media reports can cause potential buyers to mistrust EV cars!
Today, I travelled from home to High Street, Yea back home and then to the MCG in Melbourne and returned home. It was a good spread of driving including some solid accelerations and city stop-start too.

The WLTP test is the accepted standard to measure efficiency across different brands. It is designed to reflect real world driving taking into account a mix of driving i.e. around town stop-start, climbing and descending and high speed highway. Temperature and wind were good for the EV, but I could have improved energy usage by avoiding 105 in 100!

The WLTP rating on my EV is 140Wh/km. The actual rating was 133Wh/km. The trip down used less which makes sense, as we climb up returning to Yea 🙂
For the whole trip, I used just 29.7kW – 37% of battery.

The 29.7kW can be recharged from the grid during “free time” so it costs nothing. I could pay 8 cents per kW with a total cost of circa $2.40. In summer, I can use the solar feed, and if I’m not in a hurry, trickle-charge from the sun.
This car is absolutely brilliant and apart from all the energy stuff, it’s a blast to drive with an awesome sound system.
Love my EV!
